This project involved a significant extension and high quality renovation works to a 16th Century boarding house for students of St Edmund's, an independent day and boarding school located in Canterbury, Kent.

Home for the young pupils who attend St Edmund's as part of their Canterbury Cathedral Choir Scholarship, the Choir House is an ancient and beautiful building located immediately next to Canterbury Cathedral.

The varied scope of works undertaken on this development were carried out taking into consideration the sensitive and historic nature of the building.

Extensive repairs were undertaken to the home's windows. Many of the lead-light windows were either damaged or distressed, and required highly-skilled workmanship to restore them to their original condition. The home also features many original intricate stained-glass windows that required careful assessment by specialists prior to the careful completion of the works.

Further renovation works included substantial repair work to cable ends and copings, all of which were completed in lime-rich materials.

In addition to the repair works, a new extension to the home was delivered to provide much-needed additional space. This included a new music room to support the students, who all learn at least two musical instruments as part of their scholarship.

The creation of the new music room involved attaching a new ‘wing’ to the existing Choir House main building. The construction works were carefully managed throughout, taking care to form new access ways without causing structural or cosmetic damage to the existing building.
